Fire Marshal

The Hawthorne Fire Prevention Bureau

The Hawthorne Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for enforcing the state of New Jersey's Uniform Fire Safety Act within the Borough. The Fire Marshal also serves as the Borough's Housing Officer, enforcing the New Jersey Housing Code.
The Bureau is staffed by Fire Marshal Gene DeAugustines, Fire Officials Chris DiBella, Carl Mottola, and Laura Single. Their office is located on the second floor of the municipal building.

If your group or organization would like a fire prevention demonstration, or if you have any questions regarding a fire prevention or fire safety issue in your home or business, please call the Fire Prevention Bureau at (973) 427-7544, or email Fire Marshal Gene DeAugustines at [email protected]. The Fire Prevention Bureau is always willing and able to address your fire prevention and fire safety concerns.

Whenever a dwelling unit has a change of occupants, the owner is required to obtain a Certificate of Smoke Detector, Carbon Monoxide and Fire Extinguisher Compliance. Please call the bureau or email the Fire Marshal if you have any questions regarding a change of occupancy.

Illegal Apartments: The Borough is aggressively enforcing rules against the creation of illegal dwelling units such as basement apartments, attic apartments, unlicensed rooming houses or subdividing homes without permits. These situations create safety hazards and adversely affect the quality of life in our neighborhoods. Please call if you see evidence of illegal occupancy.
