Members of the Hawthorne Fire Department were requested to stand by in their firehouses by Chief Speranza at approximately 12:50 pm as the storm really started to ramp up. Fire companies were instructed that they would be assisting on EMS runs to remove patients and clear a path for the stretcher.

Rescue Co. #5 took in 2 calls to assist EMS. Engine Co. #3 was dispatched to Prospect Park to stand by at the Fairview Ave firehouse while their fire units were tied up with a working basement fire on N. 8th St.  Engine Co. #3 was released after about 30 minutes.
Chief Speranza released all companies from stand by around 5 pm as weather conditions began to improve. This was a short lived reprieve as fire companies were dispatched at 5:45 pm to Eighth Ave and Utter Ave for wires and a utility pole burning. Engine Co. #1(OIC A/C J. Counselor) and Engine Co. #4(OIC Lt. P. VanderVelde) responded to the scene. Fire companies secured the area and advised residents of the immediate area to remain in their homes. Fire Companies remaining in their quarters were held until PSE&G arrived on scene. Power was cut to the area and fire companies went back in service to head home once again and start digging out.
